Crafting Elegance: Sustainable Sudare Blinds with Custom Edges

“Delve into the craftsmanship of Shikada Sangyo, where each sudare blind reflects over a century of artisanal excellence blended with modern sustainability. In our workshop, traditional hand-stitching techniques are not just preserved; they are perfected. Our craftsmen meticulously stitch every edge by hand, ensuring custom sizes that machine stitching can’t achieve. This results in blinds that perfectly fit our customers’ specifications without compromising the beauty of the fabric.

The hand-stitching process, showcased in detailed videos on our Instagram, involves a unique invisible stitch technique, ensuring that the threads remain unseen, allowing the chosen edges to seamlessly integrate into the fabric. This meticulous approach prevents sagging and maintains the aesthetic integrity of every piece.

We have noticed a rising trend in custom orders, especially from overseas clients, who request blinds with specific edged designs. Responding to these demands, we offer a diverse range of 28 different edge types to cater to various tastes and interior designs. Each order is crafted to meet individual preferences, showcasing our commitment to fulfilling customer desires to the fullest.

Explore our sustainable practice that not only preserves the beauty and quality of natural bamboo but also supports environmental consciousness. Follow us on Instagram to see our artisans in action, bringing each customer’s vision to life, one stitch at a time.”

Exploring the Craftsmanship of Bamboo Screens: Handwoven Tradition Meets Modern Technology

Blog Content:

At Shikada Sangyo, we pride ourselves on our dedication to preserving traditional craftsmanship while embracing modern techniques. Our bamboo screens, or sudare, are crafted using two distinct methods: traditional handweaving and modern mechanical weaving. Each technique brings its unique attributes and uses, making our range suitable for a variety of applications, from residential to commercial spaces.

Traditional Handwoven Screens: Our handwoven bamboo screens are an homage to centuries-old Japanese artisanal skills. These screens are made using the outer part of the bamboo, including the nodes, which add a distinctive natural pattern and texture to each piece. This method allows for the creation of 9 different types of screens, each characterized by variations in bamboo strip thickness, thread spacing, and color. The natural features of bamboo ensure that every screen is not only beautiful but also unique. These are ideal for spaces requiring a touch of natural elegance and a connection to traditional aesthetics.

Mechanical Weaving: For areas requiring more durable and functional solutions, such as commercial settings, we utilize the inner parts of the bamboo in our mechanical weaving process. This method facilitates the absorption of flame retardant treatments, enhancing the safety features of the screens. Our mechanically woven range includes 35 different models, offering a variety of sizes, thread densities, and colors. These products can be customized to specific dimensions down to the centimeter, ensuring a perfect fit for any installation. Additionally, these screens can be equipped with lifting mechanisms, such as Roman or roller shades, providing both functionality and style.

Customization and Craftsmanship: All our bamboo screens can be customized to meet specific client needs. Whether adding decorative borders, tassels, or adjusting dimensions, we cater to bespoke requirements to create truly unique products. Our ability to enhance aesthetic appeal while maintaining functionality makes our bamboo screens a preferred choice among designers and architects worldwide.

Sustainability and Innovation: At Shikada Sangyo, sustainability is at the core of our operations. By using bamboo—an incredibly fast-growing and sustainable resource—we contribute to environmentally conscious manufacturing processes. Our approach not only respects the environment but also offers our clients products that are both innovative and ecologically responsible.

We invite interior designers, architects, and decorators to explore the potential of our bamboo screens to enhance any space, infusing it with natural beauty and contemporary functionality. Valuing Finite Resources: Shikada Sangyo’s Commitment to Sustainable Living

Shikada Sangyo: Harmonizing Craftsmanship with Nature

Since its establishment in 1912, Shikada Sangyo has been devoted to embracing natural materials and traditional Japanese craftsmanship in creating unique living spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Our journey in the modern era is not just about maintaining tradition but evolving it to meet contemporary needs while addressing global sustainability challenges.

Living with Limited Resources

In today’s world, where material consumption has skyrocketed, the reality is that resources are finite. How we utilize and conserve these resources determines our future. Shikada Sangyo has always prioritized the use of materials that offer minimal environmental impact. This commitment is not merely about reducing waste but fostering a lifestyle that values the longevity and renewability of every material used, especially bamboo.

Coexisting with Nature

Our philosophy extends beyond sustainable practices; it is about coexisting with nature. Bamboo is not only a symbol of strength and flexibility but also of sustainability. It grows quickly, reducing carbon footprints, and does not require replanting once harvested. This makes bamboo an ideal choice for creating eco-friendly products that stand the test of time while contributing to greener living environments.

Facing Global Environmental Challenges

As global issues like deforestation, air pollution, and the biodiversity crisis escalate, Shikada Sangyo’s role in promoting sustainable practices becomes even more crucial. Our efforts are geared towards creating solutions that not only address these challenges but also enhance the quality of life for our clients and their communities.

Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Interiors

Shikada Sangyo’s showroom, a testament to our sustainable approach, showcases the versatility and beauty of bamboo. Our showroom is designed to inspire architects and interior designers to incorporate sustainable materials into their projects, encouraging a shift towards more environmentally responsible design practices.

A Call to Action for a Sustainable Future

We invite everyone, especially professionals in architecture and interior design, to join us in this sustainable journey. By choosing materials that are not only beautiful but also beneficial for the planet, we can collectively ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for the next generations.

Crafting Spaces: A Journey Through Tradition and Sustainability at Shikada Sangyo’s Showroom

At Shikada Sangyo Co., Ltd., we have been delivering comfort and serenity to living spaces through our meticulously crafted bamboo sudare blinds, a testament to our unwavering commitment to natural materials and craftsmanship. With over 110 years of history since our foundation in 1912, we are now stepping into a new chapter. It began with the encouragement we received from architects and interior designers at a European exhibition in 2020, where the demand for sustainable materials was stronger than anticipated. In Japan, awareness of SDGs was just beginning to spread, but Europe had already shifted gears.

Our artisans’ skill in hand-weaving delicate and elegant sudare is perfect for decorating hotels and restaurants, and is used both domestically and internationally. From SHIKADA SHITSURAI, we propose new possibilities with natural materials.

Showroom Experience: Rediscovering the Charm of Natural Materials

The façade of our showroom greets visitors with the upright and refreshing presence of bamboo, representing vitality and cleanliness. The bamboo used here, known as “Unmon-bamboo,” features unique patterns that become darker, richer, and more lustrous as they age, capturing the essence of growth and beauty.

In the entrance hall, visitors are welcomed by various expressions of bamboo. The walls display bamboo split to make strips, showcasing the entire process from harvesting to weaving the sudare. Above, black sudare beautifully arch the ceiling, casting a subtle glow, marrying elegance with structural integrity.

Lounge Area: Crafting Comfort with Graceful Design

In the lounge area, the graceful curves of the sudare adorn the ceiling, creating a soothing atmosphere for guests. The sudare used here, stretching approximately 77 meters in length, adds depth and tranquility to the space. This design has been implemented in commercial facilities both in Japan and internationally, offering a novel experience to all visitors.

Guest Rooms: Modern Spaces Dressed in Traditional Materials

In the guest rooms, sudare is used as wall material and fixtures, providing a serene ambiance suited for a restful stay. The design flexibility allows for integration in both Japanese and Western decors, showcasing the versatility of sudare as a decorative element.

Gallery & Lab: Exploring the Diversity of Bamboo Sudare

Finally, the Gallery & Lab area displays 36 different types of sudare, inviting visitors to visually and tactically engage with the variations in color, weaving technique, and thickness of bamboo strips. This section serves as a beacon for the next generation, signaling the evolving roles and new potentials of traditional bamboo sudare.

Shikada Sangyo Co., Ltd.’s showroom is a unique space where traditional craftsmanship meets innovative design, offering an unparalleled experience to its visitors. Through our efforts, we hope to further share the beauty and possibilities of natural materials with a wider audience.
