Crafting Spaces: A Journey Through Tradition and Sustainability at Shikada Sangyo’s Showroom

At Shikada Sangyo Co., Ltd., we have been delivering comfort and serenity to living spaces through our meticulously crafted bamboo sudare blinds, a testament to our unwavering commitment to natural materials and craftsmanship. With over 110 years of history since our foundation in 1912, we are now stepping into a new chapter. It began with the encouragement we received from architects and interior designers at a European exhibition in 2020, where the demand for sustainable materials was stronger than anticipated. In Japan, awareness of SDGs was just beginning to spread, but Europe had already shifted gears.

Our artisans’ skill in hand-weaving delicate and elegant sudare is perfect for decorating hotels and restaurants, and is used both domestically and internationally. From SHIKADA SHITSURAI, we propose new possibilities with natural materials.

Showroom Experience: Rediscovering the Charm of Natural Materials

The façade of our showroom greets visitors with the upright and refreshing presence of bamboo, representing vitality and cleanliness. The bamboo used here, known as “Unmon-bamboo,” features unique patterns that become darker, richer, and more lustrous as they age, capturing the essence of growth and beauty.

In the entrance hall, visitors are welcomed by various expressions of bamboo. The walls display bamboo split to make strips, showcasing the entire process from harvesting to weaving the sudare. Above, black sudare beautifully arch the ceiling, casting a subtle glow, marrying elegance with structural integrity.

Lounge Area: Crafting Comfort with Graceful Design

In the lounge area, the graceful curves of the sudare adorn the ceiling, creating a soothing atmosphere for guests. The sudare used here, stretching approximately 77 meters in length, adds depth and tranquility to the space. This design has been implemented in commercial facilities both in Japan and internationally, offering a novel experience to all visitors.

Guest Rooms: Modern Spaces Dressed in Traditional Materials

In the guest rooms, sudare is used as wall material and fixtures, providing a serene ambiance suited for a restful stay. The design flexibility allows for integration in both Japanese and Western decors, showcasing the versatility of sudare as a decorative element.

Gallery & Lab: Exploring the Diversity of Bamboo Sudare

Finally, the Gallery & Lab area displays 36 different types of sudare, inviting visitors to visually and tactically engage with the variations in color, weaving technique, and thickness of bamboo strips. This section serves as a beacon for the next generation, signaling the evolving roles and new potentials of traditional bamboo sudare.

Shikada Sangyo Co., Ltd.’s showroom is a unique space where traditional craftsmanship meets innovative design, offering an unparalleled experience to its visitors. Through our efforts, we hope to further share the beauty and possibilities of natural materials with a wider audience.
