This product is a traditional Roman-shade style blind that has an easy-to- operate chain mechanism, making it height-adjustable.
Traditionally, Ozashiki Sudare blinds were operated manually by rolling up the blind by hand and securing the tassel strings to the hanging hooks, thus limiting the elevation of the blind to only one height.
This attribute has its origins in Japan’s distant past. The ancient use of the hitherto-named misu blind originally symbolized a separation between the divine and secular worlds, thereby acting as a permanent bulwark against evil or malevolent spirits. This purpose explains why it was not considered necessary to raise or adjust the height of the blind. However, after the Meiji Period (1868-1912), the blind began to be used for more practical purposes, such as facilitating the ventilation of the proprietor’s home during the hot summer months. Despite this transformation in utility, its ancient, noble design has remained essentially unchanged through the ages.
Due to various forces of modernity which brought about transformations in taste as well as housing specifications, the shade additionally began to be regarded as an article of furniture or interior design. Consequently, the Manyo Roman Shade not only continued to embody the traditional medieval manufacturing process and aristocratic design of the original, but also evolved to meet the changing requirements of modern home owners. One of these evolutions was the adoption of the chain mechanism allowing for one to adjust the height of the shade to his or her taste and needs. Thus, the shade is light, convenient and simple to operate, and can be used by young and old with ease. Moreover, those with older versions of our Ozashiki Sudare can simply send it to us, where it can be modified by incorporating the Roman shade mechanism.

Our current Manyo Roman Shade was conceived and designed with a number of considerations in mind. Uppermost was functionality: How do we retain the traditions of design and manufacturing while at the same time adapting its functions to suit contemporary considerations such as window dimensions? One of our more popular products is a style of blind named Shikisai. Although it lacked some traditional design elements found in Ozashiki Sudare - such as fabric edging/borders – it proved extremely popular because users could adjust its elevation to suit their modern homes and modern needs. After much conjecture, we decided to conduct a comprehensive survey in order to determine the needs of householders throughout the country. From this investigation, we discovered the following: A great many home owners desired a shade that would be in fitting with its surroundings – such as a tatami room or a place of ceremonial importance. Consequently, they wished to retain the traditional design but also enjoyed the flexibility of being able to adjust the height. From thus was born the idea behind our Manyo Roman Shade. Embodying these two elements of tradition and flexibility, and drawing upon our long experience and expertise, we succeeded in creating the first shade of its type: one that retains the look of Ozashiki Sudare while incorporating the roll-up mechanism of the Roman Shade. While most sudare companies make their fabric edging by foot-loomed twist-knitting technique, Shikada is unique among them for developing a roll-up mechanism in unison with this traditional design feature.
We offer customers the option to adapt Ozashiki Sudare blinds to Manyo Roman Shade
One of the motivations behind our development of the Manyo Roman Shade rolling mechanism was prompted by our need to overcome some of the limitations of the Ozashiki blind. For instance, it was found that the blind’s thick fabric edging rendered it difficult to “roll” up satisfactorily. As a result, our Manyo Roman Shade mechanism employs a pleated folding-style which gives raising and lowering the shade a smooth and easy ripple effect.
